The Widening Wealth Gap Exacerbated by the Economic Crisis

In 2022, the world experienced an unprecedented period of turmoil, marked by the Russia-Ukraine war, the lingering effects of the pandemic, a food crisis, an energy predicament, high global inflation, a global wave of interest rate hikes, and a significant decline in financial assets. These keywords underscore the chaotic nature of 2022 and raise questions about the state of the world. Will an economic crisis actually occur?

"The global economic growth rate is rapidly declining, and as more and more countries fall into recession, it may slow down even further. We are deeply concerned that these trends will continue, bringing long-lasting catastrophic consequences for the people of emerging markets and developing economies. To achieve the goal of low inflation, stable currency, and fast growth, decision-makers can shift policy focus from reducing consumption to boosting production. The policies introduced should be geared towards increasing investment, improving productivity, and optimizing capital allocation, which are essential for growth and poverty reduction." This statement from David Malpass, President of the World Bank Group, provides a sound answer to this question.

If we examine the global GINI coefficient published by the World Bank, it is evident that every time an economic crisis occurs, the wealth gap widens once again. The rich not only maintain their wealth but also increase it beyond pre-crisis levels. The poor, however, often become more vulnerable to risk and can only watch as their remaining wealth is taken away. Many fall into poverty and despair, and anti-monopoly and even anti-wealth sentiments have reached an all-time high among the global population. More and more people are becoming aware of the need for change but feel powerless to effect it. The world is becoming increasingly turbulent, and this is a recurring theme during every economic recession.

The reason behind this phenomenon is the Matthew effect, wherein resources are concentrated among a small group of people at a much faster rate than the average person can accumulate wealth. This is commonly referred to as the "monopoly cancer," which is akin to a tumor growing on universal human values. Prior to 2021, there were no effective treatments for this issue. However, two events that occurred after 2021 - Web3 and GameFi - have changed the perception of this situation.
